The Very Large Array The Very Large Array is the site of National Observatory of Radio Astronomy. Built in early 80's, the 27 VLA radio telescopes have a combined resolving power equivalent to a single antenna of 22 miles across (that is bigger than Washington DC). The VLA telescopes can move along rail tracks to reach different configurations. Right now, it is at its smallest configuration (1 mile across). Those tracks go across two highways.
